On January 10, 2011, iGATE Corporation announced the signing of a definitive agreement to acquire up to 83% stake in Patni Computer Systems Ltd. While the acquisition helps the combined iGATE-Patni entity get within striking distance of the threshold of US$1 billion in revenues, it evokes a mixed set of reactions. The two entities merged should create a more credible, scaled and potentially hungrier competitor. Further, there should be efficiencies in sales , operations and G&A. However, the acquisition does not create a fundamentally differentiated service provider or even alter the Indian IT services landscape in a meaningful manner.
